and the person helping the president out, playing the role of mitt romney is senator john kerry. john kerry has been out there on the stage before, a veteran of the debate format and in addition to that he's from massachusetts. and he knows mitt romney well and will be able to help the president fill in any of the blanks he might have. >> dan lothian, thanks very much for that, appreciate it. >> okay. >>> on to the republican side now. mitt romney has been spending his time in boston ifffor the p couple of days doing his prep there. and part of that prep, admittedly is zingers. he's been trying out zingers on his staff since august. let's bring in paul steinhauser. first off, the zinger aspect, sometimes they make history and sometimes they do in debates, but is it a good strategy to think about zingers? or is it something that should happen organically? >> i think what the romney campaign would say, hey, while he's doing that, he's doing other things and preparing in a lot of different ways. i don't think we should take away from this that mitt romney's going to come out and hav

if you could break down how that differs from the president's and specifically that word capability, acquiring capability, as opposed to acquiring weapons. >> it is much closer, romney's position to the position that we heard articulated by the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu when he drew the red line literally. the word capability is significant. if you're capable of building a bomb, that doesn't mean you necessarily have a bomb but you're capable of doing so. >> it could be years away, the capability could be years from actually acquiring a weapon. >> years or months or it could be weeks. it is a different tlesh hold than what the obama administration has laid out when you look carefully at what the president said at the general assembly, the most recent remarks on iran's nuclear program, he said the united states will not allow iran to have a nuclear bomb. i am paraphrasing to a certain degree. the word capability was not there. you did hear it from the israeli prime minister and today you're hearing it once again from mitt romney. mitt romney has been vague. he has gone

so the 17 economists, the way it was broken down, nine picked romney and three picked obama. five of them couldn't commit to anybody because they said, you know what? it doesn't matter because neither one can fix the economy. even some of the romney supporters, they aren't enthusiastic. one of them said romney's policies would be less bad for the economy than obama. so basically, you know, it's the lesser of two evils. not exactly a big sign of confidence here. but some say romney is more likely to have more success getting legislation through congress and supporters of obama say he's more likely to reduce the deficit and cut entitlement spending like social security. but it is kind of sad, carol, it wasn't much excitement for either of them as far as helping the economy one way or the other. >> let's talk about something a little brighter that's happening where you are. the dow's rising. >> it is. this does actually begin the fourth quarter and it looks like stocks are beginning the fourth quarter with gains. stocks were already higher and then came out big sort of granddadd
